In terms of location, the Department of Occupational, Social and Preventive Medicine operates under a unique structure. We are active not only in Göttingen, but also at a newly established site in Wolfsburg. To ensure that our findings are relevant to real-world practice, the Institute collaborates with as many stakeholders as possible. The two sites enable us to foster greater collaborations and carry out cutting-edge research projects.

Göttingen

The location in Göttingen has been in operation for many decades. Here, the Institute has made a gradual shift from its original focus on toxicology to the emphasis on artificial intelligence that it has today. In Göttingen, the Department offers a wide range of courses and also participates in various committees and cross-faculty networks (CIDAS) at the University Medical Centre Göttingen (UMG).

The premises:

The premises in Göttingen underwent a complete refurbishment in 2025/26. Particular attention was paid to ready the institute for hybrid collaborations and the challenges posed by local AI and data science models and applications. In addition, the institute was fitted out with new furniture in a modern style to provide a welcoming, professional environment for all researchers, collaboration partners and guests.

Wolfsburg

The Wolfsburg Medical Campus (MCW) has been under development since 2022. There, UMG students can undertake their training from the 1st to the 5th clinical semester and gain practical experience through special training like ‘bedside teaching’. In the long term, the goal is to expand the capacity of the MCW so that teaching for students in their third and fourth clinical semesters can be offered entirely in Wolfsburg.

For the Institute, the MCW represents a central hub where new programmes for students are being developed. Furthermore, as a key location for Volkswagen AG, Wolfsburg offers unique opportunities for the practical advancement of occupational medicine. The proximity to Berlin is also very important, as the Institute has a large network of partners there and is actively involved in policy advisory work.

The premises:

Workshops and internal meetings are held at Ostfalia, where the team’s offices are also located. The courses are held at the MCW. In our courses, there is currently a particular focus on combining occupational medicine with artificial intelligence methods, for which we are currently developing new teaching modules in collaboration with our partners.
